Get help now

Call 911 for chest pain or pressure, trouble breathing, fainting, signs of a stroke, heavy bleeding with dizziness, or any immediate risk of serious harm. For a mental-health crisis, call or text 988.

Match the clinician to the problem

You do not have to choose the right subspecialty on your own. For a stable, non-emergency concern, a primary care clinician can assess the problem and help arrange the next step. If you already have an OB-GYN or another treating specialist, ask that office how to reach the appropriate service.

A family physician can connect prevention, mood, chronic conditions, medicines, and reproductive-health concerns. An OB-GYN focuses on pregnancy and gynecologic care. Maternal-fetal medicine focuses on higher-risk pregnancies. Urogynecology addresses pelvic floor problems such as prolapse and some forms of urinary leakage. A reproductive psychiatrist has additional experience with psychiatric care around pregnancy and related reproductive transitions. Cardiology evaluates heart and circulation concerns.

Mental health and support contacts

Fresno County Behavioral Health: 800-654-3937. The county lists this 24-hour access line for information, screening, and connection to mental health and substance-use services. Ask specifically about pregnancy or postpartum mental health services when that is your need. R18 R19

988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: call or text 988. Available around the clock for crisis and emotional support. Use 911 when there is immediate physical danger, an overdose, or a medical emergency. R23

National Maternal Mental Health Hotline: 833-852-6262, or 1-833-TLC-MAMA. Free, confidential support before, during, and after pregnancy, with English and Spanish services and interpreters for other languages. It can help connect callers with additional support. R22

Marjaree Mason Center: 559-233-4357. The center lists a 24-hour confidential domestic-violence helpline for support and access to services. If someone monitors your phone or browsing, consider a safer device and ask an advocate about a safe way to communicate. If danger is immediate, call 911. R20

RCS Fresno: 559-222-7273. The 24-hour rape crisis line provides support and information after sexual assault. The organization also describes advocacy, accompaniment to forensic examinations, crisis counseling, and referrals. Ask an advocate about the options that fit your situation. Emergency medical care should not wait for a routine counseling appointment. R49

Fresno-Madera Area Agency on Aging: 559-214-0299 or 800-510-2020. This is a starting point for information about local services that support older adults, independent living, nutrition, and community assistance. Ask which programs fit your needs and eligibility. R50 R51

Every Woman Counts: 800-511-2300. California’s program can help eligible patients access breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services. Eligibility and covered services must be confirmed. The official provider locator can identify participating practices. R21

What to say when you call

“I am looking for an appointment for [the problem]. My symptoms started [when]. I am [pregnant, recently postpartum, or neither, if relevant]. Do you evaluate this problem? Do I need a referral? Do you accept my exact health plan and medical group? Which location would I attend?”

If it matters to you, add: “I would prefer a woman clinician,” “I need an interpreter,” “I need an accessible exam table,” or “I would like to discuss the examination before it begins.” Ask what can be arranged and whether it changes scheduling.

If you are calling about bleeding, pain, new mood symptoms, or a rapidly changing problem, describe that immediately. A routine scheduling line is not a substitute for emergency assessment. If the next appointment is far away, ask the treating team what level of care is appropriate while waiting.

Make sure a referral reaches its destination

Before leaving the referring clinic, know the specialty, the reason for the referral, who will send it, and how you will learn that it was received. Ask whether authorization is needed and whether the specialist needs previous laboratory results, ultrasound reports, pathology, or operative records. If no one contacts you within the clinic’s stated timeframe, follow up with both offices.

For a second opinion, bring the existing results if possible. Tell the new clinician what question remains unanswered: the diagnosis, whether a procedure is needed, alternatives, fertility effects, medication safety, or persistent symptoms despite treatment. A clear question makes the consultation more useful.
