Common Respiratory Infections: What You Need to Know

Respiratory infections affect your lungs, throat, and airways, ranging from mild colds to more serious illnesses. Understanding the differences between viral and bacterial infections helps you know when to seek care and how to manage symptoms at home.

Respiratory infections are among the most common reasons people visit their doctor. These infections affect your breathing passages, including your nose, throat, windpipe, and lungs. While most are mild and resolve on their own, knowing what to expect helps you manage symptoms and recognize when professional care is needed.

Your respiratory system has natural defenses against infection, including mucus, tiny hair-like structures called cilia, and immune cells. When viruses or bacteria overcome these defenses, infection develops. The type of infection, your overall health, and your immune system determine how sick you become and how long recovery takes.

Types of Common Respiratory Infections

The common cold affects your nose and throat, causing sneezing, runny nose, sore throat, and mild cough. Adults typically get two to three colds per year. Cold symptoms usually peak within three days and improve within a week, though cough may linger longer.

Hand hygiene is your best defense against respiratory infections. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating, after using the restroom, and after being in public places. Alcohol-based hand sanitizer works when soap and water are unavailable.

Respiratory droplets spread infection when sick people cough or sneeze. Cover your cough with your elbow or tissue, not your hand. Avoid touching your face, particularly your eyes, nose, and mouth. Stay home when sick to protect others and allow yourself time to recover.

Vaccinations prevent serious respiratory infections. Annual flu vaccine is recommended for everyone six months and older. Pneumococcal vaccines protect against bacterial pneumonia and are particularly important for adults over 65 and those with chronic health conditions. COVID-19 vaccination reduces risk of severe respiratory illness. Discuss your vaccination status with your physician.

When Medical Evaluation Is Needed

Most respiratory infections resolve without medical intervention, but certain situations require professional evaluation. Difficulty breathing, chest pain with breathing, or bluish lips or face indicate serious illness needing immediate attention. Symptoms improving then suddenly worsening may indicate secondary bacterial infection requiring different treatment. Cough or other symptoms lasting beyond two weeks deserve medical assessment. Seek emergency care immediately if you experience severe difficulty breathing, inability to speak in full sentences due to shortness of breath, bluish discoloration of lips or face, confusion or significant drowsiness, or coughing up blood. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department—do not drive yourself.
