WHO: Kenya confirms Bundibugyo cases linked to the DRC outbreak; DRC totals as of October 11

Kenya (Ministry of Health, as of October 16, 2026)

• Three confirmed cases and one death.
  • Index case: imported, confirmed in Nairobi October 6, after travel from the DRC through Uganda.
  • Second case: a close family contact who was already in quarantine, confirmed October 14.
  • Third case: detected in quarantine on October 15.
• 130 contacts line-listed: 120 in quarantine and 10 being traced, of whom seven had travelled outside Kenya.
• WHO: "no evidence of spreading in the wider community" (stated after the second case; the third was detected among quarantined contacts).
• Source note: the report’s key-facts panel and its Kenya response table (MoH data as of October 16) show three confirmed cases. DRC (DRC Ministry of Health, as of October 11, 2026)

• 9,066 confirmed cases and 4,381 deaths (confirmed and probable) across 65 health zones.
• 463 new confirmed cases and 233 new deaths in the prior seven days.
• WHO calls it the largest Bundibugyo outbreak recorded.
• Uganda's outbreak is over (20 confirmed, 3 deaths). One case was recorded in France, also closed.

Countermeasures

No licensed Bundibugyo-specific vaccine exists. Ervebo's protection against Bundibugyo virus has not been established (as already stated on Outbreak State).
